Danish postal service to deliver last letter at end of year to focus on parcels

Danish postal service PostNord has announced that it will deliver its last letter in the country at the end of the year, after which it will focus on one core service – parcel delivery – from 2026.

PostNord stressed that it aims to become the preferred courier for Danish citizens, noting that the country has become more digital and “what used to be sent by letter is now received digitally by the vast majority of people.”

“This means that there are very few letters left in Denmark. In fact, the volume of letters has decreased by more than 90 percent since 2000, and the volume continues to decrease rapidly,” the postal service said.

“On the other hand, Danes are shopping online more than ever. This creates a growing need for fast and high-quality parcel delivery in Denmark, and we at PostNord are ready to provide this.”

“That’s why we’re focused on becoming even better in the areas where Danes need us most – parcel delivery.”

PostNord added that this will not affect users in the short term, as the service will continue to deliver letters until the end of this year.

However, from 2026, residents will no longer be able to send and receive letters via PostNord in Denmark.

“If you need to send regular mail (letters, business letters, bulk mail and magazine mail), it must be handed to us by December 18, 2025,” the postal service said.

“The last day for delivery of urgent letters, registered letters, letters with return receipt requested and postal items is December 29, 2025. We will deliver the last letters on December 30, 2025.”

PostNord also announced plans to dismantle 1,500 post boxes currently located across the country starting in June of this year.

“We expect that all mailboxes will be dismantled no later than December 31, 2025. The boxes that are not dismantled will remain in operation. Each mailbox will have a time stamp indicating its dismantling in advance.

“This decision will not affect our activities in the parcel market in the countries where PostNord operates, and our services in the letter market in Sweden will remain the same.

“While this is a difficult decision, it is an important step towards securing a strong future for PostNord so that we can continue on our path to becoming the preferred courier for Danish citizens, helping to improve service quality in the parcel market.”
