Fulham strongly condemn racist and homophobic abuse directed at Calvin Bassey

Fulham players are “deeply shocked” by the racist and homophobic abuse Calvin Bassey received after his side's FA Cup penalty shootout win over Manchester United on Sunday.

The summer residents promised to take “the most decisive measures” against those who sent offensive messages to the defender, which he published on social networks.

The Premier League also said it was “shocked” by the abuse and offered its “full support” to Bassey and the club.

Bassey opened the scoring at Old Trafford and, despite Bruno Fernandes equalising, the west London club progressed to the quarter-finals with a 4-3 win on penalties.

A statement on Fulham's website said: “Fulham are deeply shocked by the racist and homophobic abuse that was received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media following yesterday's FA Cup match against Manchester United.

“We categorically condemn this disgusting behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are completely unacceptable and we fully support Calvin Bassey who will continue to have our full support.

“We will do everything possible to work with the relevant authorities to identify those who spread these disgusting messages and take the strictest measures against them.

“Fulham Football Club is committed to zero tolerance for discrimination in all forms and continues to strive to create an environment of respect and inclusivity.”

The Premier League said it was working with social media operators and authorities to combat the problem.

The league said: “The Premier League is shocked by the abuse that Calvin Bassey has received following Fulham's FA Cup clash with Manchester United. We will give our full support to Calvin and the club.
