Danny Welbeck came off the bench to help Brighton reach the FA Cup quarter-finals with a win over Newcastle, while Anthony Gordon's League Cup final hopes were ended by a late red card.
Welbeck, who scored the decisive goal in the previous Premier League game at St James' Park in October, struck again in extra time to secure a 2-1 win on a day when both teams finished with 10 men.
Gordon was sent off for violent conduct six minutes from time in a tense encounter (a similar fate later befell Tariq Lamptey, who received a second yellow card), which could see him handed a three-match ban that will see him miss the game against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on March 16.
Aleksandr Isak's 22nd-minute penalty gave the home side, who were without defender Lewis Hall due to an ankle injury that required treatment, an advantage but it was overturned before half-time by former Magpies striker Yankuba Minteh. The game, tense at times, remained level until Welbeck's intervention.
Isak watched his header from a tight angle cleared by Adam Webster in the third minute, despite both teams starting the match with clear intent.
Joelinton, back after a five-match absence, almost caused problems for his side when his blindside pass from Kieran Trippier was intercepted by Kaoru Mitoma, but Carlos Baleba's shot was blocked and the Magpies broke through, allowing Isak to fire on target in the 16th minute, but his effort was too weak for goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
However, he showed far more composure when he converted a 22nd-minute penalty awarded after Mintech, who left the Magpies last summer, brought down Tino Livramento with a mistimed tackle. The top scorer fired the ball high into the corner to open the scoring.
