Preston, meanwhile, returned to winning ways for the first time in eight games as they beat Coventry, and are hanging on to sixth in the table heading into the weekend. It is a spot Blackburn, currently 10th, would take with victory.

Can Rooney get that first win at the Stadium of Light?
There was a lot to like about Birmingham’s performance against Ipswich last weekend, as Wayne Rooney’s side came so close to a first win since he took charge. In the end they had to settle for a point, but it was a positive step against one of the best sides in the Championship after three straight defeats.
Can they build on that at the Stadium of Light? It will be a tough ask. Sunderland, at their best, can carve anyone apart, although they did fail to do so at 10-player Swansea last time out.
