Woman attacked by bear while hiking in Alaska

A brown bear attacked a woman while she was hiking along a well-known trail in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska.

Authorities are still searching for the animal, according to state police.

Anchorage police spokesman Christopher Barraza said Alaska State Troopers used a helicopter to transport the woman from the Basher Trail area to a medical facility.

According to him, the injuries she received are not life-threatening.

The woman, whose name was not released, called 911 and told the dispatcher she had been attacked by a bear about two miles from the trail, Mr. Barraza said. She told authorities she was unable to move.

Mr Barraza said the woman stayed on the phone with authorities for about an hour, explaining where she was while they used drones to search for her.

“After the bear attacked her, she said it ran away and she couldn't see which direction it went,” he added.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has cordoned off the area and is continuing to search for the bear, he said.

“We encourage everyone to be prepared when going on hikes and walks,” Mr. Barraza said. “Make sure you know what to do if you encounter a bear, bring bear spray and things like that.”

The Anchorage Fire Department posted a message on Facebook urging hikers to temporarily avoid trails in the Stackagain Heights area.
