Trump says gray skies during White House Easter egg roll mean no need to worry about sunburn

President Donald Trump greeted tens of thousands of people at a White House Easter event on Monday, noting that cloudy weather meant everyone had no worries about sunburn.

He thanked the National Park Service for how “magnificently” everything was organized.

According to him, more than 40,000 people are expected to attend the event.

“Happy Easter, everyone,” the president said, standing on the White House balcony, flanked by his wife, first lady Melania Trump, and the symbol of the holiday, the Easter Bunny.

“Yesterday was a beautiful day, and today is just as beautiful. We don't have to worry about sunburn, but… it doesn't look like rain is in the cards.”

The president and first lady visited the egg-throwing area, where he blew a golden presidential whistle to start several races. They also spent time at a station where children wrote letters to service members.

Later, Melania Trump read “The Big-Hearted Rabbit” in the reading room, a story about a rabbit who gets injured, stays in bed, and learns to be kinder to his family.

Children armed with wooden spoons competed to carry boiled eggs dyed pink, blue, yellow and green across a patch of grass to the finish line.

In some cases, the eggs were tossed rather than rolled across the grass, and at least one wooden spoon was thrown to the side.

Among the participants were some of Trump's grandchildren – the children of his son Don Jr.
