Small plane crashes into US residential area, setting homes and cars on fire

A small plane crashed into a residential area in the United States during foggy weather, setting about 15 homes and vehicles ablaze, authorities said.

The incident, which happened early Thursday morning in San Diego, also forced the evacuation of several streets.

“We have jet fuel everywhere,” Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy said at a news conference.

“Our main task is to search all the houses and immediately remove people.”

He noted that “there were direct hits on several buildings” in the Murphy Canyon area and described a “massive debris field” in a densely populated area.

It is not known whether there were any casualties.

Mr Eddy added that there was heavy fog at the time of the private jet crash.

“You could barely see what was in front of you,” he noted.

The Cessna 550 crashed around 3:45 a.m. near Montgomery-Gibbs Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

“The number of people on board is unknown at this time,” the FAA said.

The plane can accommodate six to eight people.

The FAA said the National Transportation Safety Board would lead the investigation.

In October 2021, a twin-engine plane crashed into a San Diego suburb, killing the pilot and a UPS delivery driver on the ground and destroying homes.

He was preparing to land at the airport.
