Prices will drop significantly: in October, one vegetable will become significantly cheaper

Amidst forecasts of an “autumn price increase” for a number of food products, one vegetable seems to be able to please Ukrainians.

We are talking about the “second bread” of Ukrainians – potatoes, writes UkrAgroConsult.

Agricultural market experts predict that in October, practically at the start of the new season, the cost of one kilogram may be about 10 hryvnias.

According to the Ukrainian Potato Growers Association, some farms have doubled their potato production this year, a 100% increase. This trend could lead to an oversupply on the market and, consequently, lower prices compared to previous years.

“However, the prices we are used to, when potatoes cost 5 UAH, will no longer exist. Potatoes will never be this cheap again, but I think that 10 UAH per kilogram is the price we will see. But only at the beginning of the season – in October,” the specialist predicts.

Taras Bashtannyk, president of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association, also predicted a decrease in potato prices in the fall.

He said that because of the extremely high prices for potatoes last year, many people have taken up growing this vegetable this year.

“All of Ukraine is in potatoes. And IT people are in potatoes, and cryptocurrency traders, and all farmers. Everyone invests in potatoes, in onions. And these are complicated things, they are not even grains,” the expert noted.

He predicted that potatoes will likely be cheaper this year.

“Because: a) it was mega expensive last year — 40−50 hryvnias, b) the weather conditions this year — at least in Central, Western, Northern Ukraine — are absolutely ideal for potatoes. Nothing is growing — but potatoes are growing. Therefore, I don't see any problems with potatoes, again, for half a year. Why? The same — there are not enough vegetable storage facilities,” he argued.

Thus, potatoes in 2025 may indeed please Ukrainians' wallets, albeit for a short time. Starting in November, buyers will experience a gradual increase in price.

Let us remind you that Valery, a well-known agrarian in the Kyiv region, advises planting sweet potatoes, one of the most common food and feed crops in the world, along with potatoes, which is close to potatoes in chemical composition, but richer in carbohydrates (up to 30%), including sugars (2-6%).
