Mark Carney to run in Ottawa riding for parliament

Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to run in an Ottawa riding as he seeks to enter Parliament for the first time, two people familiar with the matter said.

The announcement came on the eve of Mr Carney calling a snap general election ahead of the April 28 vote, which will take place amid a trade war and threats to sovereignty from US President Donald Trump.

The sources, who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to comment publicly, said Mr. Carney would run to represent the suburban Ottawa riding of Nepean. The campaign for the 343-seat House of Commons is scheduled to last 37 days.

The party that wins a majority in the House of Commons, either on its own or with the support of another party, will form a new government, and its leader will become prime minister.

Mr. Carney succeeds Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January but remained in office until the Liberal Party elected a new leader on March 9 following a leadership election within the governing party.

Mr. Carney, who took office as Canada's 24th prime minister on March 14, said the government needed a clear and strong mandate in the crisis.

The ruling Liberal Party appeared to be on course for a historic election defeat this year until Mr Trump declared a trade war.
