Israeli strikes on Gaza kill 23 more, doctors say

At least 23 people were killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Palestinian doctors.

The victims included three children and their parents, who were killed when their tent near the southern town of Khan Younis was hit, Nasser Hospital said.

Since Israel resumed heavy bombing of Gaza last week, breaking a 17-month ceasefire, the hospital has received scores of dead and wounded.

More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 113,000 wounded in Israel's campaign in the Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry did not specify how many of those were civilians or militants.

Israel claims to have killed some 20,000 militants, but provides no evidence.

Israel launched a military campaign vowing to eliminate Hamas after its attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which militants killed an estimated 1,200 people and kidnapped 251.

Israel says it only hits militants, blaming Hamas for civilian deaths because it operates in densely populated areas.

Meanwhile, the wife of an Oscar-winning Palestinian director who was reportedly attacked by Jewish settlers and detained by the Israeli army has said he was beaten by three men in military uniform while another filmed the incident.

Hamdan Ballal and the other directors of “No Other Land,” which chronicles the hardships of life under Israeli occupation, appeared on stage at the 97th Academy Awards in Los Angeles earlier this month, where their film won the award for best documentary feature.

Mr Ballal and two other Palestinians detained with him were released on Tuesday afternoon from a police station in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba.

Mr. Ballal had bruises on his face and blood on his clothes, Associated Press reporters at the scene said. All three were taken to a hospital in the nearby Palestinian city of Hebron.

Their lawyer, Leah Tsemel, said they spent the night on the floor of the military base, receiving only minimal medical treatment for injuries sustained in the alleged attack.

She had previously said they had been accused of throwing stones at a young settler, but they denied the charges.
