Israeli strikes in northern Gaza kill at least 46, officials say

Israeli attacks in northern Gaza have killed at least 46 people, according to local medical authorities.

Fifteen people from one family, including five women and two children, were killed in a strike on a residential building on Monday, according to Shifa Hospital.

Earlier, Gaza's Health Ministry said at least 31 people were killed in an attack on a school converted into a shelter in Gaza City.

The strike on the school in northern Gaza also injured more than 55 people, according to Fahmi Awad, head of the ministry's emergency services.

He said the school had been attacked three times while people were sleeping and their belongings had caught fire. Videos circulating online showed rescuers trying to put out the fire and recovering charred remains.

The Israeli military said the attack targeted a militant command center inside the school that Hamas and Islamic Jihad had used to gather intelligence to prepare attacks.

Israel blames Hamas for the deaths of civilians because its actions take place in residential areas.

Israel resumed its offensive in March after a truce with Hamas ended. It has vowed to take control of Gaza and continue military operations until Hamas is destroyed or disarmed and the remaining 58 hostages, a third of whom are believed to be alive, are returned from the October 7, 2023, attack that sparked the war.

More than half of the hostages were returned under ceasefire or other agreements, eight people were rescued and Israeli forces found the remains of dozens more.

Gaza's Health Ministry says Israel's response has killed some 54,000 Palestinians. It says more than half the dead are women and children, but does not distinguish between civilians and militants in its tally.
