Israeli strike kills week-old baby, fails to deliver aid to Palestinians

Israeli attacks in Gaza have killed at least 82 people, including several women and a week-old baby, hospital officials said.

The new strikes, carried out overnight between Thursday and Wednesday, came amid no signs of de-escalation in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, despite growing international condemnation over the country's widening offensive.

Israel began allowing dozens of trucks carrying humanitarian aid into Gaza on Tuesday, but aid agencies say the aid has yet to reach Palestinians who desperately need it.

UN aid agency spokesman Jens Lerke said no trucks had left Gaza through Kerem Shalom, the Israeli border crossing in southern Gaza.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday evening that although aid had arrived in Gaza, aid workers had been unable to deliver it to distribution points where it was most needed because the Israeli military had forced them to transfer supplies into separate vehicles and there was not enough time.

Internal notes distributed to aid agencies on Wednesday confirmed that not a single truck carrying humanitarian aid left Kerem Shalom, the Israeli border crossing in southern Gaza.

The records show that 65 trucks left the Israeli side of the checkpoint for the Palestinian side but did not reach Gaza.

The Israeli Defense Authority, which is responsible for humanitarian aid in Gaza, said trucks began entering Gaza on Wednesday morning, but it was unclear whether the aid would be able to continue on its way for distribution.

The UN refugee agency said it had to wait several hours to pick up the aid at the border crossing and begin distributing it, but it was unable to do so on Tuesday.

Britain suspended free trade talks with Israel on Tuesday over its escalating attacks, a day after Britain, Canada and France pledged to take concrete steps to encourage Israel to end the war.

In a separate statement, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc was reviewing its trade deal with Israel over its actions in the Gaza Strip.
