Israeli airstrikes kill 23 in Gaza amid growing anger over aid blockade

Israeli airstrikes on Saturday night in the Gaza Strip killed at least 23 Palestinians, including three children and their parents, whose tent was destroyed in Gaza City, health officials said.

The strikes come amid growing international concern over Israel's intentions to control the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza as the Israeli blockade covering the territory of more than two million residents enters its third month.

The UN and aid groups have condemned Israel's aid distribution efforts, including a plan by a group of American security contractors, former military personnel and humanitarian workers calling themselves the Gaza Humanitarian Fund.

Gaza's Health Ministry said 23 bodies taken to medical facilities in the past 24 hours included those of a family of five whose tent was damaged in a strike in the Sabra area of Gaza City.

Friday evening's strike also targeted a warehouse belonging to UNRWA, the UN agency that cares for Palestinian refugees, located in northern Jabaliya.

According to the Indonesian hospital where the bodies were taken, four people were killed.

Video provided to AP shows fire in the destroyed building.

Local residents say the warehouse remained empty after it was repeatedly hit by Israeli ground operations against Hamas militants over the past year.

The Israeli military said nine soldiers were lightly wounded on Friday when an explosive device went off during a search in the Shijaiya area of Gaza City. They were evacuated to a medical facility in Israel.
