Hamas says Israel trying to disrupt ceasefire as aid to Gaza cut off

Hamas has accused Israel of trying to destroy a tense ceasefire in Gaza by proposing a new extension.

The militants said Israel's decision to stop aid to the region on Sunday was “base extortion, a military violation and a blatant attack on the (ceasefire) agreement.”

Israel earlier said it was halting all goods and supplies entering Gaza, warning of “further consequences” if Hamas did not accept what Israel described as a US offer to extend the ceasefire.

It is not yet clear whether aid has been cut off completely.

The first phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which saw a significant increase in humanitarian aid, ended on Saturday.

The sides must still agree on a second phase, in which Hamas is expected to release dozens of remaining hostages in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal and a sustainable cease-fire.

Israel said it supported a proposal to extend the first phase of the cease-fire through Ramadan and Passover, or April 20. It said the proposal was made by the Trump administration's special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

Under the proposal, Hamas would release half the hostages on the first day and the rest after a permanent ceasefire is agreed upon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said.
