Further police reinforcements from the U.K. are being dispatched to Northern Ireland on Thursday following another night of severe disturbances stemming from an alleged knife attack by a foreign national suspect.
Scotland is contributing 90 officers to Northern Ireland to bolster the 200 officers from other parts of the U.K. who were previously sent to the area. This deployment follows accusations that protesters set alight vehicles, properties, and other outdoor items, hurled projectiles at law enforcement, and targeted immigrant healthcare workers on Wednesday, according to investigators and local officials.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported on Thursday that 16 individuals have been apprehended this week in connection with the successive nightly protests in Belfast and other towns. Authorities are actively seeking additional suspects linked to the violent demonstrations.
Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson informed journalists that 12 officers sustained injuries during Wednesday night’s events, with some allegedly struck by incendiary devices and other thrown objects.
Law enforcement personnel were compelled to deploy a water cannon to disperse certain groups.

“Our communities in Northern Ireland are entitled to reclaim their normal routines. Yesterday, commercial establishments ceased operations, transportation services were halted, and we witnessed schools closing prematurely due to apprehension. This is the consequence of the actions of these hooligans,” he stated.
Amidst the ongoing destruction and disorder on the streets, the family of the individual injured in Monday’s stabbing incident that triggered the riots implored for composure and understanding.
The family of Stephen Ogilvie, who is reported to be in a stable condition following the assault, issued a statement on Wednesday expressing their “utter disgust” at the footage of the violent protests.

“We wish to state unequivocally that responding in this manner is not endorsed by our family, and peaceful demonstration is invariably the correct course of action,” the family conveyed.
A Sudanese immigrant allegedly assaulted Ogilvie with a bladed weapon at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Monday near Kinnaird Avenue before being subdued by bystanders and apprehended by the police.
The victim “sustained severe injuries to his eyes and lacerations to his back and face,” the police department confirmed.
The 30-year-old suspect has been formally charged with attempted murder, possessing a bladed article in a public space, and making threats to kill. The investigation is continuing.

The demonstrations that have erupted since the assault have been propagating anti-immigrant sentiments and have caused disruptions throughout Northern Ireland, according to law enforcement officials.
In one incident on Wednesday, 20 individuals wearing masks allegedly obstructed a roadway and hurled projectiles at officers. In another incident in Portadown, demonstrators laid siege to a property for hours, according to the PSNI.
During the protests, some participants allegedly accosted immigrant healthcare professionals who were commuting to and from their places of employment, as reported by the police.
UNISON Northern Ireland, the union representing healthcare workers, stated in a release that it had received reports this week of employees being trailed, stopped by individuals demanding identification, and subjected to intimidation at their residences.
“They are caregivers, nurses, teaching assistants, and numerous other professionals who provide essential public services. They are here because our government and public services invited them to fill critical vacancies in these vital sectors. The hypocrisy of those orchestrating the hate campaign is astonishing,” UNISON declared in a statement on Wednesday.

Henderson indicated he was scheduled to meet with UNISON representatives on Thursday and also expressed his solidarity with the healthcare workers.
“They form the bedrock of our public services. They are tending to our families, friends, and loved ones within our communities. We stand in support of them, just as they support us,” he remarked.
Ogilvie’s family also voiced their support for Northern Ireland’s immigrant population and its healthcare professionals.
“We have numerous migrants who make a profoundly valuable contribution to our nation, including within our healthcare system and hospitality industry, and we rely on them to ensure our country functions. We do not wish for this terrible incident to be exploited to create divisions or incite animosity – please do not act in the name of our loved one, as we do not share these values,” they stated.

Beyond the street disturbances, law enforcement has also been engaged in countering a surge of false information concerning the knife attack and protests that is proliferating on social media platforms, actively promoted by anti-immigrant organizations and personalities.
Ogilvie’s family further condemned those disseminating misinformation about the assault and subsequent demonstrations.
“If you possess any information whatsoever regarding the attack, or if you witnessed anything unusual in the vicinity of Kinnaird Avenue, please come forward to the police and cease sharing fabricated details on social media, as it is deeply distressing,” they urged.

Henderson implored the public to heed the family’s request.
“They could not have been clearer that acts of violence are not being carried out in Stephen’s name,” he asserted.
