Death toll from Russian missile strike in central Ukraine rises to 18

The death toll from a Russian missile strike on the central Ukrainian city of Krivoy Rog has risen to 18, including nine children, the region's governor, Serhiy Lysak, said.

Friday's attack left an additional 72 people injured, ranging from a three-month-old baby to elderly citizens.

Currently, 40 people are in hospital, including two children in critical condition and 17 in serious condition.

“There is no justification for this,” said the chairman of the city defense council, Oleksandr Vilkul. “Eternal memory to those who died.”

Kryvyi Rih is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The missile hit the area adjacent to residential buildings, hit a children’s playground and ordinary streets,” Mr. Zelensky wrote on Telegram.

Local authorities said the strike damaged about 20 apartment buildings, more than 30 cars, an educational institution and a restaurant.

Russia's Defense Ministry said Friday it had launched a precision missile strike with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead on a restaurant where unit commanders and Western instructors were meeting.

The Russian military claimed that the strike killed 85 servicemen and foreign officers and destroyed 20 vehicles. This could not be independently confirmed, but the Ukrainian General Staff rejected the claims.
