Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is heading to Greenland for a three-day visit aimed at building trust with local authorities as the Trump administration seeks to assert control over the vast Arctic territory.
Mette Frederiksen announced her travel plans after US Vice President J.D. Vance visited a US air base in Greenland last week and criticised Denmark for underinvesting in the region.
Greenland is a resource-rich island of strategic importance that is becoming increasingly accessible due to climate change.
Mr Trump noted that the territory is of key importance to US national security. It is part of North America, but is a semi-autonomous region that belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark.
Ms Frederiksen plans to meet with Greenland's new leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who was elected in last month's elections that formed a new government.
She will also hold talks with the future Naalakkersuisut, the cabinet minister, whose visit will last until Friday.
