PARIS and LONDON — Responding to Tuesday’s two-week truce, initially declared by President Donald Trump and subsequently affirmed by Iranian authorities, international leaders articulated their aspirations for a comprehensive accord to terminate the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated on X that the suspension of hostilities "will deliver a time of respite to the area and the world. In conjunction with our allies, we must strive to bolster and uphold this cessation of fighting, transform it into an enduring arrangement, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz."

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani similarly indicated the truce was "a notably favorable occurrence" which "propels us toward a peace accord — for the populace, for the region, and for Israel — furthermore, for our economy."

German Friedrich Merz expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its mediating endeavors, noting on X, "The present objective is to negotiate a lasting cessation of the conflict. We are in close communication with our allies regarding this issue."

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, conveyed that the truce offered "much-needed easing of tensions" and emphasized that additional dialogues are "vital."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, a notable European critic of the conflict, communicated on X that the halt in fighting was "welcome tidings," yet added, "Brief alleviation must not overshadow the disarray, the decimation, and the lives extinguished."

"The Spanish administration will not commend those who ignite global instability merely for offering a solution," Sanchez supplemented. "Currently necessary: diplomacy, global regulations, and PEACE."

French President Emmanuel Macron underlined that the circumstance in Lebanon — another arena of the dispute in which Israel is combating the Iran-backed Hezbollah force — is "precarious."

Macron indicated the truce encompassed Lebanon, as did Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed overnight that Lebanon was not factored into the arrangement. Israel persisted with substantial bombardments in Lebanon, including Beirut, on Wednesday.

Macron labeled the cessation of hostilities "a decidedly positive development" and stated the Lebanon question is "among the most sensitive.” Hezbollah, Macron argued, committed a "strategic misstep" by engaging Israel and involving Lebanon in the regional turmoil, but suggested Israel's assaults and control of southern Lebanon "cannot be a sustainable remedy."

Numerous Persian Gulf and other neighboring nations similarly acknowledged the cessation of hostilities in Iran, although several documented recent Iranian drone and rocket strikes on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry voiced its backing for the respite in a declaration published on X, while Qatar's Foreign Ministry depicted the cessation of hostilities as "a preliminary measure toward de-escalation." Doha further underscored "the requirement for the Islamic Republic of Iran to undertake the initiative to promptly halt all belligerent actions and practices."

Oman — traditionally a facilitator of U.S.-Iranian discussions — articulated in a Foreign Ministry proclamation that it validated "the significance of intensifying endeavors presently to discover resolutions adept at concluding the crisis at its inception and accomplishing a perpetual cessation of the condition of conflict and belligerent actions in the area."

Jordan's Foreign Ministry declared on X that it "emphasized the necessity of unblocking the Strait of Hormuz and guaranteeing the liberty of global navigation unhindered in accordance with global legislation."

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi declared on X that the announcement "unquestionably imparted comfort to the sentiments of myriad peace-loving individuals across all regions of the globe," appending that Cairo esteemed Trump's "resolution to heed the counsel of prudence."

The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement conveying its support for the peace initiative, elaborating, "We shall persist in extending all requisite assistance for the fruitful realization of the dialogues scheduled for Islamabad," referencing Friday's anticipated negotiations.
