Two liters of liquid in hand luggage – this will be possible at these Polish airports

The list of airports that are installing or have started procedures related to the installation of special scanners is growing, thanks to which it will be possible to carry on board the plane in hand luggage not 100 ml but 2 liters of liquids – informs the website fly4free.pl.

As a reminder, passengers can now carry up to 2 liters of liquids in their carry-on luggage on flights departing from several EU airports. They won't have to be removed from their suitcases—or electronics. The United Kingdom previously took this step.

Changes at airports coming in September

This became possible – in the case of EU airports – following a decision by the European Commission. However, increasing the limit twenty-fold requires the installation of special 3D CT scanners.

Among Polish airports, the first steps in this direction were taken by the authorities of the airports in Lublin, where the installation of scanners began in February, and Poznań.

Marcin Wesołek, spokesperson for Poznań-based Ławica Airport, told fly4free.pl that the scanners are already in place, but work is underway on their software. The devices will then need to be approved by the Civil Aviation Authority. The entire process should be completed in September.

Warsaw and Krakow in the queue

Travelers departing from Krakow's Balice Airport will soon be able to benefit from this convenience, as the necessary scanners have already been installed. Airport procedures are currently being adapted to new EU regulations, which is expected to take several weeks.

There are currently no scanners at Warsaw's Fryderyk Chopin Airport, still Poland's largest airport. However, Okęcie Airport authorities are currently conducting a tender to select a scanner supplier. Installation should begin after the summer season ends.

Rzeszów, Szczecin and Katowice will wait longer

The Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport is also conducting a tender for the purchase of new scanners. However, the liquid limit increase at Szczecin's Goleniów Airport will take much longer, as the installation of new scanners will be combined with a major airport renovation. The modernization is expected to be completed in two years, by the end of 2027.

A year later, new scanners are expected to arrive at Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport. They will be located in the new terminal, which is scheduled to open in 2028.

Flying from Wrocław or Gdańsk? Grab a drink in advance.

There are no plans to install new scanners and consequently raise the liquid limit in Wrocław, where the airport is currently undergoing a major renovation. However, installing the new equipment will require expanding the terminal. However, this remains a long way off, and more specifically, the coming years.

Passengers using Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdańsk will have to wait years, not months, for a higher liquid limit. According to Agnieszka Michajłow, spokeswoman for the Gdańsk airport, if the scanners are replaced in the future, it will be done in stages due to high installation costs.

Among European airports, scanners required to increase the liquid allowance in hand luggage are already installed in Rome (Flumicino), Milan (Malpensa, Linate), Milan-Bergamo, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. They are expected to be installed soon in Berlin, Dublin, Frankfurt, Madrid, and Barcelona.
