So far, over 6.5 million people have blocked their PESEL number. This is a preventive measure that reduces the risk of, among other things, obtaining a loan using stolen data – the Ministry of Digital Affairs informed in a statement on Tuesday.
The Ministry reminded that from June 1, 2024, all financial institutions (banks, loan companies) are required to verify the status of the PESEL number before, for example, granting a loan or credit. With a reserved PESEL number, they can be sure that the application is submitted by the right person.
“Over 6.5 million people have already decided to block their PESEL number. Thanks to this, we reduce the risk that criminals will use our data, for example, to obtain a loan. Importantly, this can be done quickly and easily in the mObywatel application,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski.
The Ministry emphasized that blocking the PESEL number is not only protection in the event of loss of documents or identity theft, but also a preventive measure.
There are three ways to block your PESEL number: in the mObywatel application, on the mobywatel.gov.pl portal and by submitting an application to any municipal office.
Reserving a PESEL number is free and voluntary. To use this option, you must be an adult and have legal capacity.
“If we plan to take out a loan, for example, we can easily withdraw the PESEL number restriction and then reserve it again. By withdrawing the PESEL restriction electronically, we can also independently set the date and time when our PESEL will be automatically reserved again,” the ministry reported. (PAP)
