According to the entry from 15 April this year, the industries in which the Institute is to operate are: scientific research and development work, software and IT consulting, website management, data processing and hosting, publishing activities, rental and leasing, office administration and business support.
On February 25, the Council of Ministers adopted a regulation on the establishment of the IDEAS Research Institute, which is to combine two important areas: military and civilian. According to the regulation, it is managed jointly by the Ministry of Digital Affairs (MC) and the Ministry of National Defense (MON). It is to be a unique center for research on artificial intelligence on a European scale.
After the government meeting, during which it was decided to establish the IDEAS Institute, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski said that after registration in the National Court Register and granting a statute to this entity, the structure will be prepared and the first research projects will be written. The government has secured PLN 20 million for this. The next step is to employ scientific leaders and research staff.
The Institute's scientists are supposed to focus on research on artificial intelligence, machine vision, computer graphics and natural language processing, with particular emphasis on solutions for security, defense, public administration, and “green cities”. The institute's research agendas are to be regularly assessed by the Scientific Council.
The establishment of the IDEAS Research Institute was announced by the ministries of digitalization and science and higher education in October last year. According to the plans at the time, the Institute was to start operating on January 1, 2025. It was announced then that its creation would be handled by Prof. Sankowski, who had previously founded and headed the IDEAS NCBR center (in 2021-2024). He left his position in October last year after he was not elected president of the center.
Piotr Sankowski is a computer scientist, a postdoctoral degree holder in mathematical sciences, a professor at the Institute of Computer Science at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw and – as the only scientist from Poland – a four-time winner of European Research Council grants.
