The GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, in the “Means of Destruction” section of the “Components in Weapons” section of the War&Sanctions portal, publishes an interactive diagram, components, and electronic component base of the “E” series “Geran-2” unmanned aerial vehicle, equipped with a portable anti-aircraft missile system.

Main theses:

  • A new modification of the Russian drone “Geran-2” is equipped with the “Verba” MANPADS and a warhead.
  • The operator controls the drone in real time, activating servos to launch the missile at the target.
  • After firing a missile, the drone is capable of performing other strike missions, including targeting by the operator.

War&Sanctions: New modification of “Gerani” simultaneously carries MANPADS and a warhead on board

In response to the effective work of the Ukrainian Air Force and Army Aviation in destroying enemy UAVs, the enemy continues to adapt its unmanned platforms to destroy air targets.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's GUR reported on the use of the Gerani-2 with the Soviet R-60 air-to-air missile. Today, details of the drone's new configuration were revealed — now with the Verba MANPADS on board.

This modification involves manual control of the drone by the operator in real time. This uses a Chinese Honpho TS130C-01 optical camera, located in the nose fairing, as well as a Xingkay Tech XK-F358 mesh modem (PRC).

In case of detection of an air target, the operator gradually activates two servo drives: the first one starts the chemical battery and the nitrogen cylinder for cooling the homing head (GOS) of the MANPADS, the second one opens a specially made protective cover after the GOS has cooled to the required temperature. The missile trigger is fixed in a permanently pressed position using cable ties, which ensures automatic launch immediately after the homing head captures the target.

An important difference between this version and the modification with the R-60 missile is the presence of a full-fledged main warhead on the drone itself. The tested GUR sample is equipped with a TBBCH-50M thermobaric warhead.

Modified drone “Geranium”

Thus, after firing an anti-aircraft missile, the UAV retains the ability to perform its main strike mission. Target guidance can also be performed by the operator.

The set of blocks and components is standard for such “Geraniums”: a flight controller, an inertial navigation system, a 12-channel “comet”, a tracker based on a Raspberry microcomputer and 3G/4G modems, etc.

The inertial navigation system uses the new 6-axis SCH1633-D0I inertial module manufactured by Murata (Japan) for the first time. This module was introduced in late 2024 as a solution for civilian automotive systems – autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems.

The countries of origin of the remaining electronic component base are the USA, China, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

A full list of components with markings and photos is available on the War&Sanctions portal.

The publication of such data is aimed at exposing the technological chains of Russian military aggression and contributing to the strengthening of international sanctions pressure.
