ChatGPT's artificial intelligence noticed suspicious behavior from one of the users —

Jessie Van Rutselaar — who later carried out one of the largest school shootings in Canadian history. However, OpenAI did not report this to law enforcement.

Main theses:

  • The company considered notifying the police, but abandoned the idea.
  • Jessie Van Rutselaar killed her family members and six people at school.

OpenAI ignored ChatGPT's warning

OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, officially confirmed to journalists that Jesse Van Rutselaar's account was discovered back in the summer of 2025.

It's about a trans woman who, a few months later, carried out one of the largest school shootings in Canadian history.

In June 2025, OpenAI identified and blocked her account for violating the model's rules and potentially “promoting violent activity,” but did not report this to the police.

The company considered notifying the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) but decided not to do so because at that time it had not found direct evidence of “an imminent and credible threat of serious physical harm to others” — which is, according to their rules, the threshold for referring a case to law enforcement.

Once the shooting had already occurred, OpenAI contacted the RCMP and provided information about the suspect's use of ChatGPT.

Moreover, company representatives assured that they would continue to support the investigation.

What is important to understand is that the shooting occurred in Canada, in the town of Tumbler Ridge, on February 10.

Jessie van Rutselaar first killed her mother and 11-year-old brother, then went to a school, where she shot a teacher and five students. Another 25 people were injured. The woman then committed suicide.
