Archaeological discoveries from 6,000 years ago on the new S8 route

Archaeological work on the planned S8 expressway between Kobierzyce and Jordanów Śląski uncovered traces of an agricultural settlement dating back to 4000 BC and a cemetery dating back to 2000 BC. The finds date back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. These discoveries will not delay roadworks.

The discovery was announced on Thursday during a meeting with archaeologists. Researchers discovered traces of a settlement inhabited by an agricultural population dating back to 4000 BC.

“These people occupied this entire area. It was also their peculiarity that they stayed in one place for a maximum of a dozen years. Therefore, it's no surprise that there are many places where their remains can be found,” explained archaeologist Ireneusz Klimczak.

The second discovery was the discovery of a cemetery belonging to a later culture that occupied these lands. Its presence dates back to the Early Bronze Age. Members of this community inhabited Lower Silesia 2000 BC.

Researchers argue that the grave discoveries are linked to the Únetice culture, which developed south of Poland. Given that the lands of Lower Silesia have always been among the most fertile, archaeologists suggest that representatives of this population most likely migrated here through the Moravian Gate or the Kłodzko Valley.

“We found a dozen or so burials at the beginning, and now we've discovered more. They're interesting; the deceased were buried in a fetal position with their arms crossed over their chests,” Klimczak said.

The discoveries were made on a section of the planned S8 expressway between Kobierzyce near Wrocław and Jordanów Śląski.

This is one of three sections of the planned S8 expressway between Kobierzyce and Łagiewniki. A road construction permit (ZRID) has not yet been issued for this section. Therefore, Magdalena Szumiata from the Lower Silesian branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) assured on Thursday, the findings will not affect the pace of work.

The section between the Kobierzyce Północ and Kobierzyce Południe interchanges is also awaiting a ZRID decision. A decision has already been issued for the section of the planned route between Jordanów Śląski and Łagiewniki.

All three sections are scheduled to be ready in the third quarter of 2027.

It is also part of the route between Wrocław and Bardo, with a total length of approximately 64 km. The road will be an extension of the S8 route, which currently ends near Kobierzyce, running from Białystok. The final section of the S8 route will be the section between Bardo and Kłodzko. Tendering procedures for this section are still underway. (PAP)
