What went wrong for Southampton as they set a relegation record

Southampton's relegation from the Premier League was officially confirmed after their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham.

The Saints became the first team to be relegated from the Premier League with seven games to go and are still one point short of equalling Derby's record low of 11 points in 2007-08.

The PA news agency looks at the reasons behind the failures of this memorable season.

Recruitment

Former sporting director Jason Wilcox joined Manchester United in April 2024 but was instrumental in setting the stage for promotion with victory over Leeds in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

Southampton only appointed Johannes Spors as 'group technical director' in mid-February.

However, the team ultimately ended up being quite overloaded, lacking quality in key positions and the shortcomings became apparent as the season progressed.

Problems with attack

Since Southampton's relegation in 2023, the lack of goals has become one of the biggest problems.

Adam Armstrong failed to maintain his excellent form after promotion and went on loan to West Bromwich Albion at the end of January.

Cameron Archer was signed from Aston Villa in the summer but managed only a couple of league goals, last returning to the team in October.

Chilean striker Ben Brereton Diaz was also transferred from Villarreal but failed to score a goal before eventually being loaned to Sheffield United.

The Saints eventually turned to Paul Onuachu
