According to the Indonesian media outlet Jakarta Globe, the passenger boat set sail from Komodo Island at around 8pm local time on Friday, heading to Padar Island for a tour. About 30 minutes later, the boat's engine failed. It later capsized and sank in the Padar Strait.
Authorities said that, according to preliminary data, the cause of the accident was unusually high sea waves, exceeding two meters, which led to the vessel capsizing.
There were 11 people on board the KM Putri Sakinah (the coach, his wife and four children, four crew members and a guide). Seven of the crew members, the guide, as well as Martin's wife Andrea and his 7-year-old daughter Mar managed to survive. The search for the bodies of the coach himself, as well as his children aged 9, 10 and 12 (two sons and a daughter) is still ongoing.
