In the semifinal match, the 23-year-old from Kyiv crushed the world's 6th racket, the daughter of a billionaire from the United States, Jessica Pegula, in two sets in 56 minutes – 6:0, 6:3, winning only the second match out of six against her opponent.
“It's never easy when you're leading 6:0, 3:0,” Marta Kostyuk commented on her success. “Jess is an incredible player, many years in the top 10. I was waiting for the fight, I was waiting for her to come back into the game. And, honestly, I was tense until the last rally. I even thought I missed, but the ball hit the court. And yes, I'm very happy to be in the final.”
By the way, on the way to the semifinals, the second-ranked Ukrainian defeated rivals with a “Russian footprint” – Yulia Putintseva (74th) from Kazakhstan – 6:7, 6:1, 6:0, American Amanda Anisimova (3rd) – 6:4, 6:3, and the first-ranked Russian Mirra Andreeva – 7:6,6:3.
