On Sunday, February 22, the XXV Winter Olympic Games ended in Milan, where about 2,900 athletes from 93 countries around the world (including 13 “neutrals” from Russia and 7 from Belarus) competed for 116 sets of medals in 16 sports.
VIDEO OF THE DAY
Ukraine, represented by 45 athletes in 10 sports (our country did not compete in skeleton due to the scandalous elimination of Vladyslav Geraskevych), unfortunately, for the third time in history was left without any awards at the Games. The best results at the Olympics were shown by our team of freestyle ski acrobatics (Angelina Brykina, Oleksandr Okipnyuk, Dmytro Kotovsky), the luge relay team consisting of Yulianna Tunytska, Igor Goy, Nazariy Kachmar, Andriy Mandziy, Olena Stetskiv and Oleksandra Mokh – 6th place, the luge duet Olena Stetskiv – Oleksandra Mokh – 7th, the biathlon team in the mixed relay (Dmytro Pidruchny, Vitaly Mandzin, Olena Gorodna and Anastasia Merkushyna) – 8th, the biathlon team in the women's relay (Olexandra Merkushyna, Yulia Dzhima, Khrystyna Dmytrenko, Daryna Chalyk) – 9th, as well as freestyler Kateryna Kotsar in big air, biathlete Vitaly Mandzin in mass start and freestyler Oleksandr Okipnyuk in ski acrobatics — 10th.
The top 15 (by number of “gold”) in the Milan 2026 medal standings were formed (Norway finished first for the fourth consecutive time):
1. Norway — 41 medals (18 gold, 12 silver, 11 bronze);

At the eight previous Olympics, Ukrainian athletes won 9 medals. In 1994 in Lillehammer, Oksana Baiul won a historic “gold” in figure skating, and biathlete Valentina Tserbe-Nesina won “bronze”. At the Nagano 1998 arenas, our team limited itself to “silver” for biathlete Elena Petrova. In 2006, biathlete Liliya Efremova won bronze in Turin, as well as the figure skating pair Olena Grushyna and Ruslan Goncharov. In Sochi 2014, there was gold in the women's biathlon relay (Olena Pidgrushna, Valya Semerenko, Vita Semerenko, Yulia Dzhima). In Pyeongchang 2018, freestyler Oleksandr Abramenko brought Ukraine the only gold medal, and in Beijing 2022 he won the only silver medal. Unfortunately, at the 2002 (Salt Lake City), 2010 (Vancouver), and 2026 (Milan) Olympic Games, Ukrainian athletes were left without medals.
We would like to add that the closing ceremony of the Games, at which the flag of Ukraine was entrusted to be carried by freestylers Angelina Brykina and Dmytro Kotovsky, will take place on February 22 (starting at 9:00 PM) at the Arena di Verona (capacity 12,000 spectators) – an ancient Roman amphitheater built in Verona around 30 AD.
Previously, “FACTS” reported how much a gold medal from the 2026 Olympic Games is worth.
