Tottenham come back from two goals down to salvage a point against Bournemouth

Son Heung-min's 84th-minute penalty saved Tottenham from a two-goal defeat, ending the match in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou was in dire need of a boost after Thursday's poor Europa League performance against AZ Alkmaar and brought back Christian Romero but watched as the Cherries took charge on Pitch 17.

Marcus Tavernier's 42nd-minute goal put Andoni Iraola's side ahead before Evanilson doubled the lead in the 65th minute.

At that point, Micky van de Ven, who had been expected, appeared on the pitch and after Pape Sarr's precise strike from a cross, two more substitutes helped the hosts to win a point.

James Maddison fed Son, who had been brought down by Kepa Arrizabalaga, and the Tottenham captain got to his feet to deny Bournemouth a win that would have lifted them into sixth place.

After the poor performance in Alkmaar, Postecoglou made six changes and Romero appeared in the starting line-up for the first time since December 8.

Romero wore an armband while Son was benched but soon showed indecision, passing his left foot straight to Evanilson and only a superb save from Guglielmo Vicario kept the goal intact.

A one-on-one opportunity came just 15 seconds later, but another followed four minutes later when Yves Bissouma was dispossessed and Vicario came to the rescue again, making a low save to deny Justin Kluivert.

Spurs were beginning to regroup against their European hopefuls but on 17 minutes Romero had to bring down Kluivert on the edge of the area but Tavernier's subsequent free-kick hit the wall.

Dominic Solanke had Tottenham's first shot on target in the 22nd minute but his header hit Kepa and Bournemouth got the goal they needed three minutes before the break.

It was a classic Cherries counter-attack, with Pedro Porro's pass intercepted and Milos Kerkes racing down the left before setting up a superb finish for Tavernier, who fired the ball into the far corner for his third goal of the season.

The break was met with disgruntled Spurs fans and Postecoglou responded by introducing captain Son and Lukas Bergwall.

Six minutes later, Bournemouth thought they had doubled their lead when Evanilson passed to Kluivert for another breakthrough, but Antoine Semenyo was caught offside in the build-up.

Tottenham took advantage of the opportunity immediately, with Son cutting inside and releasing the ball, but Tavernier deflected his shot onto the post.

Van de Ven returned to the pitch just after the hour mark, with Maddison also coming on, but the Cherries soon celebrated a second goal.

Kerkes and Kluivert combined before the latter set up Evanilson, who expertly fired past Vicario.

At that point, Spurs looked destined for a 15th league defeat, but the hosts were given a golden opportunity shortly after Bergwall hit the post from long range.

Sarr looked up and tried to pass to Solanka, but his pass went past Kepa to make it 2-1.
