The former number one racket of Ukraine returned to tennis after six months and immediately became the champion: video review of the final

One of the strongest tennis players in Ukraine, Angelina Kalinina, who last year defeated the current world number one Arina Sobolenko, triumphantly returned to the courts after a six-month break due to health problems.

In the final of the WTA 125 tournament in Limoges (France), the 28-year-old native of Nova Kakhovka snatched victory from the second-seeded Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemo (59th in the world ranking) in three sets — 6:3, 4:6, 7:5.

The final match lasted over two and a half hours. In the first set, Kalinina made a comeback, losing 1:3, and in the decisive set, the Ukrainian lost 3:5. After the fiasco, Jacquemo angrily threw her racket and left the court.

“After six months of absence, I'm just grateful that I can be on the court, that I'm healthy, that I'm able to play five matches,” said Ukrainian top-ranked player Angelina Kalinina during an on-court interview. “Because when I came here, I had no idea how things would be, whether I would be able to play even one match. I've really worked hard this week, but you never know what's going to happen, and for me it's a huge surprise. I'm really happy and satisfied with my health.”

It just so happened that Kalinina won the WTA 125 singles title for the second time, and both times she was unmatched in Limoges (the first time in 2022).

Recall that Angelina has not been on the court since early June, when she failed to finish her opening match at the WTA 125 tournament in Bari (Italy). Success in France allowed the Ukrainian to immediately rise 28 positions in the WTA ranking – from 155th to 127th.

Previously, “FACTS” reported that Angelina Kalinina's childhood home was destroyed by the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station.
