Sporting merits prove useless – Palace criticise Europa League exit

Crystal Palace have said their “sporting achievements have lost all meaning” following UEFA's decision to exclude them from the Europa League and the rejection of their appeal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

On 11 July, UEFA determined that the FA Cup holders were relegated to the Conference League because American businessman John Textor had control or influence over both Palace and French club Lyon on 1 March.

Palace appealed but the Court of Arbitration for Sport said on Monday that the London club had rejected their appeal and Nottingham Forest are expected to take their place in UEFA's second-tier competition.

An Eagles statement said: “At a time when we should be celebrating the Community Shield victory at Wembley, the decision of UEFA and then the Court of Arbitration for Sport demonstrates that sporting achievements are meaningless.

“When we won the FA Cup against Manchester City on that momentous day in May, our manager and players deserved the opportunity to play in the Europa League.

“We are denied this opportunity.

“It seems that certain clubs, organizations and individuals have unique privilege and power.

“This growing and unhealthy influence has shattered the hopes and dreams of Crystal Palace fans and does not bode well for ambitious teams across Europe seeking to progress when rules and sanctions are applied unevenly and in the most egregious manner.”

PA news agency has approached UEFA and CAS for comment.
