Scarlets celebrate victory over United Rugby Championship leaders Leinster

The Scarlets secured their first win over Leinster since December 2018, winning 35-22 in the United Rugby Championship to keep their play-off chances alive at the end of the season.

It was only Leinster's second defeat this season and the Scarlets' first win against an Irish side since March 2021.

The impressive home side scored four tries from Tom Rogers, Joe Roberts, Gareth Davies and Taine Plumtree, while Sam Costelow converted a penalty and three and Ioan Lloyd added two.

Leinster's tries came from Jamie Osborne, James Culhane and Diarmuid Mangan, while Ross Byrne scored two tries and added a penalty.

The Scarlets had their first chance to score but Costelow missed a simple free kick.

However, the Welsh team did not give up and soon took the lead. A powerful run from Plumtree broke through the defense and Davies, supporting the attack, squeezed under the posts.

Costelow converted the penalty and added another before Leinster suffered another setback when their defender Brian Deeney left the field with a leg injury.

A penalty from Byrne opened the scoring for the Irish but the Scarlets quickly responded with a second try when Costelow's perfectly placed strike found Rogers for a spectacular finish.

However, just after the start of the second half, the Scarlets gifted their opponents seven points when Costelow's clearance was intercepted by substitute Managan, with Osborne picking up the ball and scoring.

It was then Leinster's turn to make a mistake when Plumtree took advantage of a stray pass and ran 45 metres, but the Irish remained in contention as Managhan blasted home from close range to leave them 22-15 down at half-time.

Two minutes after the restart, Scarlets scored their bonus goal when Blair Murray's timely introduction created an opening for Roberts, but Leinster responded quickly with Culhane firing home.

Costelow was replaced by Ioan Lloyd, who extended the lead to 13 points with two penalties, and that was enough to secure a comfortable victory as Leinster failed to score a point in the final half hour.
