Saturday sport: Wins for Monaghan and Derry as Allianz Football League returns

GAA

Football Leagues

The Allianz Football League got underway on Saturday.

In Division 1, All-Ireland champions Dublin suffered a 3-9 to 1-14 defeat against Monaghan at Croke Park.

Earlier, Derry took a one-point win over Kerry in Tralee, where things ended 0-15 to 2-8.

In Division Two, there was a draw between Meath and Fermanagh, ending 0-12 to 1-9, Cavan got a 0-16 to 0-12 win away to Kildare, and Armagh beat Louth 0-12 to 0-11.

In Division Four, Laois beat Longford 1-12 to 2-7, while Tipperary were defeated by Carlow at Semple Stadium, finishing 3-10 to 1-14.

Women’s National League

There was one game in the top flight of the Lidl Women’s National League on Saturday, in which Mayo took a narrow victory over Galway, ending 2-5 to 0-10.

Soccer

There are six more ties down for decision today in the FA Cup’s fourth round.

Non-League side Maidstone took a 2-1 win over Ipswich Town in the early game.

In the afternoon games, Brighton beat Sheffield 4-2, Leeds drew 1-1 against Plymouth Argyle, Leicester City took a 3-0 win over Birmingham, and Luton bested Everton 2-1.

In the late game, Newcastle beat Fulham 2-0 at Craven Cottage.

Tennis

Aryna Sabalenka is the Australian Open champion for the second year running.

The world number two beat China’s Qinwen Zheng 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
