Saturday sport round-up: Man Utd lose at Old Trafford while City continue poor run of form

Premier League

Ruben Amorim suffered the first major setback of his Manchester United reign as Nottingham Forest capitalised on some poor defending and goalkeeping to secure a shock 3-2 Premier League win at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola refused to blame fatigue after his injury-depleted 10-man Manchester City side were held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Russell Martin described the mistakes which are costing Southampton dear this season as “madness” after his side slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

Also in the Premier League today, the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool was “postponed on safety grounds” due to Storm Darragh.

Rugby

European rugby returned to Thomond Park this evening, as Munster came out on top against Stade Français with a 33-7 scoreline.

Peter O’Mahony, Craig Casey and Jack Crowley all started after returning from Ireland duty, while Tadhg Beirne made the bench.

The win was facilitated by Stade Français who lost their secondrows Pierre-Henri Azagoh and Baptiste Pesenti to two red cards in a four-minute spell early in the second half.

Elsewhere in Pool 3, Saracens beat the Bulls 27-5 while Northampton Saints came out on top against Castres with a scoreline of 38-8.

Caolin Blade made his 200th appearance for Connacht this evening, as the province beat Zebre by 31 points at the Dexcom Stadium for their Challenge Cup opener.

Cricket

Orla Prendergast starred as the Ireland women’s cricket team claimed victory in their T20 series against Bangladesh today.

The tourists won their second test by 47 runs in Sylhet earlier, taking the series 2-0.

Formula One

McLaren have dominated the final practice session at F1’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris first and second on the leaderboard.

Lewis Hamilton was third fastest ahead of qualifying taking place this afternoon.

McLaren go into tomorrow’s action with a 21-point advantage over Ferrari in the race to win the constructors’ championship.
