Ryan Mason appointed to first permanent managerial role after agreeing move to West Brom

Tottenham manager Ryan Mason is set to take on his first permanent coaching role after agreeing a move to West Brom, according to PA news agency.

West Brom have been searching for a new manager since Tony Mowbray was sacked on April 21.

Mason quickly became the frontrunner, but Spurs' unpredictable 2024-25 season, in which they enjoyed Europa League success, did not conclude until May 25. After a brief rest, the former England midfielder was given time to reflect and decided to accept West Brom's offer.

The move marked the end of Mason's seven-year managerial career at Tottenham, where he came through the club's academy and played 70 games for his boyhood team.

Mason was forced to retire from playing in 2018 at the age of 26 after suffering a fractured skull in a Premier League game for Hull away to Chelsea the previous year.

Ten years after his only England appearance against Italy, the London manager takes on his first Championship managerial role.

Highly rated Mason held talks with Belgian club Anderlecht in October before a mutual decision was made to stay at Tottenham, allowing the 33-year-old to help the club win their first trophy since 2008.

After two previous spells as caretaker manager at Tottenham, including leading the team to the League Cup final in 2021, Mason is tipped for a successful future in management.

Mason initially began his coaching career with Spurs' youth team after retiring from playing in 2018, before being named to Antonio Conte's staff shortly after three years as caretaker manager after seven games.

Another interim role was created in 2023 following Conte's departure, before Angie Postecoglou kept Mason on his staff.

After another two years as Tottenham's first-team coach, Mason will take over at West Bromwich Albion, who have finished the season
