Roy Keane wins Expert of the Year award

Despite Roy Keane's controversial career in coaching, he has achieved considerable success as a pundit on Sky Sports and ITV.

The Manchester United legend has never shied away from criticising his team-mates and opponents throughout his career, and he has carried that outspoken approach into his work as an analyst.

The British Sports Journalists' Association has named Keane as its pundit of the year for 2024.

Corkman has achieved considerable success on Sky and has also become popular on podcasts, hosting Stick to Football on Overlap alongside Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Jamie Carragher and Jill Scott.

Keane beat nine other analysts to win the pundit of the year award, including TalkSport's Ally McCoist and Sky's Carragher.

United's problems were a constant topic of discussion for him.

However, he recently shocked the public by criticising United captain Bruno Fernandes – perhaps the only player who does not deserve Keane's wrath.

In a heated discussion with Wright on Stick to Football, Keane said: “Save us? They're 15th in the league and he's saving them? Thank God.”

“You need a starting point. I go back to all this – talent is not enough. Bruno is a talented player, but that is not enough.

Former Arsenal star Wright's attempts to defend Fernandes further angered Keane, who added: “You're telling me (about) who you were in the dressing room with. 'Tony Adams was like this', 'Tony Adams was like that'. Yeah, because he was a fighter. Bruno is not a fighter.

“You have young players. You have to look at someone and say, 'I like what he's doing.'

“Not everyone can score from 25 yards, I get it. But you need someone to say, 'Are you with me, guys?'”

Wright said “if Bruno is out United will be in the relegation zone” and tensions mounted as Keane rejoined former Arsenal captain Adams.

When Wright said that this was the captain he was used to, Keane exclaimed: “Yes, yes, of course. This is the captain we are waiting for!”

“Was Tony Adams the most talented player in the Arsenal dressing room? So why do you look up to Tony Adams and say, 'Look, I've got plenty of time for him'?

“And what did he do with his leadership? Leadership is action. For me, leadership is action.”

Fernandes has responded well to the criticism and continues to put in excellent performances for a United side that is struggling and sits 13th in the Premier League with a Europa League win as their only chance
