Rangers appoint new coach Russell Martin on three-year deal

Rangers have officially announced the appointment of Russell Martin as head coach of the club.

The 39-year-old former coach of MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton has signed a three-year contract.

He will be joined at Ibrox by assistant Matt Gill and performance coach Rhys Owen.

Martin led Southampton to the Premier League last year but was sacked in December after just one win in his first 16 games.

Rangers finished last season under former captain Barry Ferguson, following the sacking of Philippe Clement in February.

Martin, a former Scotland defender who spent a brief loan spell at Rangers in 2018, is expected to re-establish the club's fortunes in Glasgow as Celtic continue to dominate Scottish football, winning a 13th William Hill Premiership title in 14 seasons.

“During my time here I have come to appreciate how unique this club is and the expectations, passion and history it has,” he said on the club's official website.

“Now that I am back, I am determined to bring success back to the fans, the players and everyone at this club.

“There is a lot to do but the aim is clear: win games, win trophies and give Rangers fans a team they can be proud of.”

Martin's appointment is the latest significant change at the club.

An American consortium led by Andrew Kavenagh and 49ers Enterprises acquired a majority stake on Friday, with new athletic director Kevin Thelwell officially taking over on Monday.

Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart, who oversaw the recruitment process alongside Thelwell, said: “Our requirements for our next manager were clear: we were looking for someone who could deliver on the way we wanted to play, improve our culture, develop our squad and ultimately win games. Russell was an outstanding candidate.”
