Chief executive Omar Berrada says Manchester United are determined to balance “ambition” with the need to be “cautious” in the transfer market after being given the go-ahead to complete a deal for Wolves' Matheus Cunha.
The Red Devils are aiming to rebuild their squad after their worst season in the top flight since relegation in 1973-74, made even more painful by last week's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in Bilbao.
The heavy defeat meant United were left without a trophy and a chance to compete in the Champions League, costing the club £100 million (€120 million), and the club wasted no time in trying to strengthen Ruben Amorim's squad.
Cunha is set to be the first to feature after Wolves granted clearance to complete a medical and sign the Brazilian, exercising his £62.5m (€74.4m) release clause, PA news agency has learned.
The summer could be a busy one for new arrivals and departures at Old Trafford, with chief executive Berrada confident in the club's plans.
“I can't go into detail, but I can say that we have been preparing for this for many months,” he explained to MUTV. “We have been prepared for various scenarios and now we have a clear understanding of what needs to be done.
“We have a clear idea of where we need to invest to improve the team, so (technical director) Jason (Wilcox), his team and Ruben have been in discussions for several months.
“The challenge now is to implement this plan, acting with caution but still maintaining an ambitious approach.”
Berrada spoke during the first stop of United's post-season tour of Asia, which is expected to earn the club an estimated £8m.
