Alexander Isak will remain at Newcastle next season as no one is in a position to sign him.
That is the view of former Magpies defender John Anderson, amid intense speculation over the Swedish striker's future on Tyneside following his absence from the club's opening pre-season friendly against Celtic on Saturday.
The 25-year-old forward was thrust back into the spotlight last week when Premier League champions Liverpool hinted they were prepared to offer £120million – around £30million less than Newcastle's initial valuation – if he became available.
However, Anderson told the PA news agency: “Once you have quality players they will always be linked with other clubs. That's natural in our sport and that's not going to change.”
“I'm just not sure anyone can afford Isak at the moment, and that's the whole point.
“There's a lot of talk about whether he'll sign a new contract and whether the club will offer him a new deal. I don't think the guy is in a rush to sign a new deal because he's got three years left on his current deal.
“Why should he do this?”
