Newcastle have reached an agreement on a fee for Aston Villa striker Jacob Ramsey.
The 24-year-old is set to head to the north-east for a medical after a fee of around £40million was agreed, according to PA news agency.
The expected sale of Ramsey, who made 167 appearances at Villa Park, would be a net profit for Villa, who are under pressure from UEFA financial fair play and public safety regulations to sell the player.
If the medical is successful and personal terms are agreed within the next 24 hours, Ramsey could become a Newcastle player before the team visit Villa Park for their first Premier League match on Saturday lunchtime.
Villa manager Unai Emery is not expected to receive significant financial gains, if any, as the club's spending is under scrutiny by UEFA following a £9.5m fine for breaches of rules.
The club are interested in re-signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Asensio, who spent the second half of last season on loan.
Ramsey's arrival at St James' Park will be a morale boost for Eddie Howe's side after a difficult transfer window.
They signed Anthony Elanga and Malik Thiaw on loan and Aaron Ramsdale but missed out on signing Benjamin Cesko, who opted to join Manchester United instead.
Alexander Isak's future also remains uncertain, with the Swedish international expressing a desire to join Liverpool.
