Munster crash out of URC after semi-final shootout defeat to Sharks

The Sharks secured a place in the United Rugby Championship semi-finals after a tense shootout victory over Munster in Durban.

After a 24-24 draw at the end of regulation time, neither team could find a winner in extra time, leading to a series of kicks from the 15-metre and then 10-metre line, where Rory Scannell missed and the Sharks converted all six of their attempts to reach the final.

The visitors opened the scoring nine minutes into the first half when Jack Crowley hit the crossbar and the ball bounced to Calvin Nash, who intercepted it and dived over the line before Crowley added more. However, the game was tense as both Crowley and Jayden Hendricks failed to convert their penalties.

The game became more dynamic after the break and the Sharks capitalised on their good start when Ethan Hooker broke from the right flank, beat the Munster defence and scored, with Hendriks converting well before giving his side the lead from the penalty spot.

Finin Wycherley then stepped through the gap to pass after a quick Munster break and Crowley's strike was well placed as the home side extended their lead after failing to clear Mike Haley's effort, allowing Diarmuid Kilgallen to pounce on the loose ball and score before Crowley converted.

The Sharks staged an impressive comeback, scoring two tries in the last 15 minutes, one of which was converted by Hendricks from an Aphelel Fassi pass, while Fez Mbatha fired past the visitors' three-line defence to score before Hendricks added another.

A successful penalty from Conor Murray from inside his own half levelled the scores at 24-24 and the game went into extra time, where Hendriks' attempt at a drop goal was superbly blocked by Thomas Ahern before the game went to a shootout, with the Sharks winning.
