Matheus Nunes is the surprise hero as Manchester City take a step towards the Champions League

Matheus Nunes' stoppage-time goal gave Manchester City a vital win over top-flight Aston Villa as they battle for Champions League qualification looms.

Neither side could afford to make a mistake on Tuesday as the FA Cup semi-finalists sought to reach Wembley with a vital result in their race for a place in European football's elite.

Marcus Rashford looked set to earn Villa a draw when the on-loan Manchester United striker converted a penalty shortly after Emiliano Martinez had conceded a Bernardo Silva goal early in the first half.

City dominated the game and shot statistics, with Nunes finishing off a low pass from substitute Jeremy Doku to secure the win in the fourth minute of added time.

Pep Guardiola's side moved up to third with 61 points after Tuesday's win, while Unai Emery's Villa remained four points behind in seventh place and suffered their first league defeat since February.

It was a late blow for Villa, who, as in their impressive win over Newcastle on Saturday, were looking to make a difference when Ollie Watkins opened the scoring after just 33 seconds.

Rashford was one of five substitutes for the win and 18 seconds into the match he fired a low shot towards the far post after Youri Tielemans had slotted past Ruben Dias.

City held on and took advantage with just seven minutes remaining.

A wonderful pass from Diaz to Omar Marmouche followed by a run towards the byline and a cut back before the ball bounced hard off Ezri Konsa and was met by a powerful shot from Silva, who seemed to have let it slip past Martinez.

A bizarre mistake by the World Cup winner left Villa just 11 minutes away from a draw.
