Another defeat at Old Trafford. But this was not the same Manchester United.

There were signs of hope after the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.

The team played with great intensity and hit the Gunners hard from a variety of positions, with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo continuing to show the form they showed last season in the Premier League.

Finally, Ruben Amorim has players in the central attacking zones who can create chaos with their direct movements and physical strength.

Cunha topped the list for dribbles (6) and tackles (20), while Mbeumo's performances were all very positive despite being under scrutiny for much of the match.

If they continue to play with the same consistency at Old Trafford this season, it could be a tough place for opponents. The expected goals ratio of 1.59 suggests they were at least willing to score. No points, but a promising start.

Something to build on.

What more could Nuno want?

Nottingham Forest had a little fun at Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries during a productive opening game of the season.

Nuno had spoken of a “lack of options” in the squad midweek, something he reiterated after the comfortable 3-1 win. “The club knows the needs of the team, so we have to be patient and see. The sooner they come, the better,” he said.

Forest may indeed need extra strength to compete in European competitions on top of their Premier League commitments, but the squad is already well stocked.

New signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off at the City Ground and their new team-mates showed their class by outclassing Brentford, which in truth was not a difficult task.

Morgan Gibbs-White, however, stood out in style. Elliot Anderson was active in midfield and was a contender for assists early in the season. Chris Wood picked up where he left off last year with two goals. Callum Hudson-Odoi was also a tough opponent.

Nuno can probably count himself lucky. This is a fantastic team with exceptionally talented players. What more could he want?
