Mark Chapman started with a joke as he opened Saturday's first match of the day since Gary Lineker's departure from the programme.
Chapman is one of three new presenters on the BBC's Saturday Night Live, rotating with Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan. He was the first to take up the position at the start of the new season.
Introducing the programme, Chapman said: “The Premier League is back and so is Match of the Day. You may have heard that there's a big change this season with Wayne Rooney joining us as a regular pundit.”
“But some things stay the same and Alan (Shearer) is still here.”
Former England captain Rooney, 39, joined the programme after finishing his final spell as manager at Plymouth in December.
Chapman, 51, previously hosted Match of the Day when Lineker was away and was a regular presenter of Sunday's Match of the Day 2.
From this season onwards, Sunday match reviews, as well as the new Champions League reviews, will be called Match of the Day.
Cates hosted the Premier League season preview show on Wednesday alongside Rooney, Danny Murphy and Julien Laurens. Logan is due to host the Sunday night Match of the Day programme this week.
Lineker's final appearance took place on May 26 at the end of last season, as previously planned.
The 64-year-old pundit had planned to host the BBC's FA Cup and 2026 World Cup coverage but pulled out after a social media row over a post he made about Zionism that included an image of a rat traditionally used in anti-Semitic contexts.
Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid presenter and the host of Match of the Day since 1999, has apologised for his post but said it would be “best for all concerned” if he left the programme.
