Manchester United suffer 17th Premier League defeat of the season against West Ham

Europa League finalists Manchester United continued their poor run in the Premier League, while rivals West Ham celebrated their first top-flight win at Old Trafford since 2007.

Ruben Amorim's side head into Sunday's encounter with confidence after booking their place in the Bilbao final against Tottenham with a 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, capping off an impressive 7-1 semi-final victory.

However, United failed to translate their European success into the domestic league, continuing their worst Premier League season in their history. Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen earned West Ham a crucial 2-0 away win.

The east Londoners ended an eight-match winless run with a first league win at Old Trafford since Carlos Tevez scored 18 years ago.

The 2007 result was a disappointment for that season's champions, while it was United's 17th league defeat and ninth at home, marking a historically poor campaign for a team that has now managed seven top-flight wins.

Graham Potter's Hammers beat the Red Devils to leave Amorim's side in a lowly 16th place, two Premier League games away from a Europa League final against 17th-placed Tottenham.

The winner will receive a trophy and a Champions League berth in Bilbao, where defender Leni Yoro's fitness remains in doubt after he limped off early in the second half.

The injury underlined why Amorim made six changes on Sunday, when United wore special T-shirts emblazoned with the logo of the charity (RED) to help raise funds and awareness for the global fight against health injustice.
