Manchester City sign Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of former Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.

The 33-year-old, who has signed a one-year deal, will take up the role of back-up keeper to first-choice Ederson and will be a regular assistant to Stefan Ortega.

The former Fulham goalkeeper's arrival comes after it was announced on Monday that veteran Scott Carson will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

Bettinelli said: “It is a great honour for me to sign for City. I have long admired the success of this club since Pep Guardiola arrived and it is a pleasure to be part of its further development.”

Bettinelli, who has made just one first-team appearance at Stamford Bridge in four years, becomes City's second signing of the summer following the £31.3million arrival of left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves on Monday.

The news follows confirmation of the appointment of former Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders as Guardiola's second-in-command.

The Dutchman, who also worked at PSV Eindhoven, Porto and NEC Nijmegen, previously worked with Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

He left Liverpool with Klopp in the summer of 2024 and became coach at Red Bull Salzburg, but was sacked in December last year.

He will be joined at the Etihad Stadium by new set-piece coach James French, who joins from Liverpool after 13 years in charge.

The appointments come after the departure of three members of Guardiola's coaching staff: Juanma Lillo, Inigo Dominguez and Carlos Vicens at the end of the 2024-25 season.

City football club director Hugo Viana said: “Pepeyin and James have gained a lot of experience in their roles over the past few years.

“Their talent, hard work, work ethic and total dedication are perfectly in line with the values Pep wants to see in football.”
