Luke Shaw questions squad quality after Europa League final defeat

Luke Shaw has said the whole squad needs to think about their qualifications to play for Manchester United as the long-serving defender apologised to fans for the disappointing end to the season.

The Red Devils' worst season in the top flight since relegation in 1973-74 was compounded by a 1-0 defeat in the Europa League final to Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday.

Shaw was involved in the game in which Brennan Johnson scored the only goal to hand 16th-placed United their first Europa League defeat this season at 17th-placed Spurs.

Asked how he looked back on the disappointing end to the season, the England international replied: “I think you've just said it.”

“It's hard to describe this season in words, but for a club of Manchester United's stature it's simply unacceptable.”

“I think that I and all of us have to ask ourselves today: are we good enough to be here? Because this club and this season is unacceptable.”

“We understand this, and it's up to us. As I said, it's really hard to accept.”

“It's hard to say anything more than what I've already said. We have to analyze ourselves. Something has to change.”

Since joining United from Southampton in 2014, Shaw has endured many adversities and worked with a number of different managers, with mentality often playing a key role in the problems.

However, the England international is confident that head coach Ruben Amorim is the man who can turn things around.

“I think a lot of it has to do with mindset,” Shaw said. “Believing in yourself is a big part of football.”

“I think there have been many times this season when we've gone out on the pitch not believing we could win. There's a lot that needs to change. So Ruben is absolutely the right choice.”

“He understands and sees what happens in the club every day, not only on the pitch but also off the pitch, in the club environment.”

“The standards, the thinking… like I said, he sees it all. I'm sure
