Liverpool secure Premier League title with thrashing of Tottenham

Liverpool clinched the Premier League title in style with a comfortable 5-1 win over Tottenham at Anfield.

First-half goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo effectively sealed a record 20th top-flight title, before Mohamed Salah's 28th of his scoring campaign and an own goal from Destiny Udoga sealed the final score.

Spurs threatened to spoil the celebrations that had begun hours before kick-off by taking an early lead through former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke, but the Londoners offered little resistance and the Reds stepped up their game.

The title, won with four games to go in the season, was only the Merseysiders' second in 35 years. It was also the first time in that time that they have been allowed to celebrate in front of their fans since their 2020 triumph, which was achieved amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Arne Sloth's men went into the fixture with a 12-point lead over second-placed Arsenal and needed only a draw to officially secure the trophy that had looked inevitable for weeks.

The win capped a memorable first season for the Slot coach, who took over from the successful and hugely popular Jurgen Klopp last summer.

Slot became the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League and the fifth man to do so in his debut season after Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini and Antonio Conte.
