Liverpool on brink of title as Trent Alexander-Arnold goal sends Leicester out

Trent Alexander-Arnold capped Liverpool's Premier League triumph by scoring the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 win that saw Leicester City relegated from the league.

Alexander-Arnold, back on the pitch after injury, came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 76th minute at the King Power Stadium to put his side one step closer to triumph.

The Reds can secure their 20th top-flight title and second in Premier League history if Arsenal fail to beat Crystal Palace in midweek.

Liverpool fans will certainly hope the Gunners do not fail as it would give them the chance to see their side lift the title at Anfield against Tottenham next Sunday – a moment that was robbed of them in 2019-20 when their success under Jurgen Klopp took place behind closed doors due to COVID-19.

While Alexander-Arnold was in the treatment room, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk signed new contracts. It is unclear whether he will follow suit, but if not, he has already made his mark with that crucial goal.

While it will be a season of celebration for Arne Sloth's side, it has been a year of misfortune for Leicester as they suffer a second relegation in three seasons and return to the Championship.

Manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has lost 16 of his 20 league games, is in no rush to commit to a second-tier club next season and his future could now depend on circumstances.

There was a significant rift between the fans and the Fox management, and before the match began, a plane flew over the stadium with a banner reading “King Power is stupid – fire the management.”

The day had been long awaited – their fans had not seen a home league goal since December 8 – but it came after one of the team's best performances of the season, when they held off the champions until the final 15 minutes.

Salah could have turned the tide much earlier but missed a golden opportunity in the third minute, hitting the post and seeing the ball bounce off the goal and in the other direction.

There was panic at the other end of the pitch soon after when Wilfried Ndidi also hit the post from the edge of the area, and then Salah was stopped again when Mads Hermansen saved a quick counter-attack.

Before the break, the Egyptian striker again missed a great opportunity, shooting wide of the opponent's goal.

Once play restarted, things were one-sided as Liverpool pressed forward to open the scoring. Cody Gakpo blocked Ricardo Pereira's effort, Hermansen saved Kostas Tsimikas's effort and Salah narrowly missed the target by inches.

Leicester somehow remained in the game and thought they had ended their home drought, which now stands at 133 days, when Conor Coady headed into an empty net but the referee called a foul on Alisson by Patson Duckie.

The home side finally opened the scoring with 14 minutes remaining when Salah and Diogo Jota hit the woodwork, but Alexander-Arnold, who had come on five minutes earlier, fired through the crowd to spark celebrations.
