Leinster camogie semi nearly cancelled as Kilkenny and Dublin opt for shorts over skort

A protest by Kilkenny and Dublin at the Leinster semi-final almost led to the game being called off.

30 players were given shorts instead of the mandatory skorts that tournament participants must wear.

The move was part of a movement for women to have the right to wear shorts instead of the mandatory skorts, which are a skirt with shorts underneath.

The referee ordered both teams to return to their locker rooms and change into shorts or the game would be stopped.

When Dublin and Kilkenny finally took to the field, Kilkenny won 4-11 to 2-12.

Fine Gael spokesperson for sport Senator Evanne Ni Chuilinn said: “Just last week the Gaelic Players' Association (GPA) told the Camogie Association that 83% of players found skorts uncomfortable and inappropriate. This is not a new view. The protest yesterday reflects events that took place 15 years ago.

“The skorts rule is becoming a barrier and distracting from the sport itself. We were supposed to be discussing the game tonight, but instead we are discussing the difficult situation that women players find themselves in.

“The fact that the association was willing to allow two senior inter-county teams to participate in the championship and then refused to allow them to play is outrageous to anyone who wants to encourage women and girls to take an active part in sport.

“It's time to listen to the players and at least give them a choice.”
